I was just reading Dr Lonsdale’s most recent newsletter and he makes reference in several locations to proper dental care for dogs and provides links to scientific documents in that regard. It’s interesting to note that the OLD documents from the scientific veterinary community promote the feeding of raw meat and bones, based on science.
There is one document from the 1960’s in which JAVMA published the results of one such study. In following some of Dr. Lonsdale’s links I opened this one:
“In 1968 a paper entitled Control of Dental Calculus in Experimental Beagles published in Laboratory Animal Care cited the JAVMA paper as a reference. Brown and Park the researchers stated: ‘The test confirmed the feasibility of preventing the accumulation of dental calculus in experimental beagle dogs by regular weekly feedings of oxtails.’ And ‘No harmful effects of feeding oxtails have been observed in the colony of 200 dogs after more than 6 years’.
See the full paper at:

BRAVO for Dr. Lonsdale in trying to get this IMPORTANT information out there.
Another proponent of sensible dental care for our dogs is Dr. Richard Pitcairn. I highly recommend his book but if you’d simply like to learn his recommendations for dental care, read his brief article Dentistry Problems for Dogs and Cats.
